"New Flags Flying"

For those interested in Hawaiian sovereignty or the history of decolonization in the Pacific, Radio New Zealand hosts a website worth visiting. New Flags Flying includes background information on each independent nation of the Pacific, audio recordings (with print transcripts) of interviews with Pacific leaders and a "significant events since independence" narrative for each country.

Dr. Douglas L. Oliver: 1913-2009

We regret to note the passing of Douglas L. Oliver , who died peacefully in his sleep on October 30, 2009. Born in Rushton, Louisiana in 1913, Dr. Oliver held an undergraduate degree in anthropology from Harvard and a D.Phil. from the University of Vienna. While his early fieldwork focused on Bougainville, he would over the course of his career write widely about the Pacific. The Hawaiian Collection is pleased to announce that the full run of the  Honolulu Weekly  is now available online at: https://evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10524/55438 The  Honolulu Weekly  was published between 1991-2013. For many in Honolulu during these years, especially prior to the advent of the Internet, the  Weekly  was a welcome alternative to the Honolulu dailies, offering a fresh take on Honolulu's music and culture scene, and focusing on astutely selected issues of the day. The paper’s weekly publication cycle and long-format cover stories often allowed writers to explore topics at a depth the daily newspapers were unable to, while also encouraging writers to go beyond simple reporting and into a more nuanced analysis.
