Hawaiian & Pacific Collections

The Pacific Collection recently acquired a set of twenty-four cabinet card images of Tahiti , taken circa 1895 by an unidentified member of an American tourist group. The photographs include a range of subjects, some with captions, including landscapes, interiors and exteriors of buildings, and Tahitians. One image in particular stands out -- a man, woman and child in front of their home. On the back of the image is a hand-written caption: "Lawyer Goupil's residence, finest on the island." On the one hand, both the image and caption are somewhat unimpressive, but they hint at a more historic value: Auguste Goupil was a well-known lawyer in Tahiti. The image presumably shows Goupil, his wife and their daughter, Jeanne. Roughly a year after this photo was taken, Goupil hired Paul Gauguin to paint Jeanne, which resulted in one of Gauguin's more famous works, "Portrait of a Young Woman, Vaite (Jeanne) Goupil." The University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa Library recently coordinated the purchase of a subscription to  Ethnographic Video Online , which provides faculty, staff and students throughout the UH system with online access to  over 1,300 hours of streaming video, including ethnographic films, documentaries, feature films and previously unpublished fieldwork.  The collection includes the work of a number of UH faculty members, as well as several highly regarded Hawai'i- and Pacific-based filmmakers, including (among many others) Vilsoni Hereniko, Eddie and Myrna Kamae, Tom Coffman, Stephanie J. Castillo, Peter Rockford Espiritu, Puhipau, Wendy Arbeit. In addition to searching out specific titles, users can browse in a variety of ways, including by Cultural Group, Places Discussed, and People Discussed. The UH-M Library recently joined the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) consortium, which allows Manoa students, faculty, staff and affiliates free access to a variety of services, including free interlibrary loan (via second day UPS airmail) to more than 5 million items held by the Ohio-based CRL library, including many of potential use to scholars of Hawai'i and the Pacific. The Hawaiian & Pacific Collections have entered into a three-year trial subscription with AsiaPacificfilms.com , which allows streaming online access to complete films. At present, the library is subscribing to four films: The Land Has Eyes (pictured); Act Of War: The Overthrow Of The Hawaiian Nation ; Nation Within ; and Simple Courage . Access is limited to UH-Manoa students, faculty and staff -- the films can be reached by clicking on the titles above; alternately, to access a "group record" that links to all four titles, click here . The UH-M Library is now subscribing to "Films On Demand," which provides streaming access to educational videos in the humanities, social and natural sciences, business and health. The site allows searching for entire films or clips within films, and includes a fair amount of Hawai'i- and Pacific-related content. Films include: Made in Taiwan: Genes, Culture, and the Peopling of the South Pacific (a documentary featuring Nathan Rarere and Oscar Kightley, pictured here); Margaret Mead: Coming of Age (on Mead's life and work); The Empire Strikes Back (on various creole and pidgin English languages, including those of Melanesia in general and Papua New Guinea in particular); Where's the Catch: Pacific Fishing in Crisis and others.
