In late January 2017 digital and print copies of several genealogies from the  Jack Tobin Papers  were given to the Council of Iroij (Council of High Chiefs) of the Marshall Islands. The previously-made agreement relating to access was reconfirmed, this time by the entire Council. As part of the agreement the Pacific Collection created print copies for the Library at the College of the Marshall Islands, for the Historic Preservation Office, for the Alele (National Library, Archives and Museum), and for the Council. This is the conclusion of several years of work between the UHM Pacific Collection and Wilbert Alik, the head of the Department of Marshallese Studies at the College of the Marshall Islands. The originals of these genealogies were donated to the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Library by Dr. Tobin in increments over several years, and will be permanently archived by the Pacific Collection. The University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa Library recently coordinated the purchase of a subscription to  Ethnographic Video Online , which provides faculty, staff and students throughout the UH system with online access to  over 1,300 hours of streaming video, including ethnographic films, documentaries, feature films and previously unpublished fieldwork.  The collection includes the work of a number of UH faculty members, as well as several highly regarded Hawai'i- and Pacific-based filmmakers, including (among many others) Vilsoni Hereniko, Eddie and Myrna Kamae, Tom Coffman, Stephanie J. Castillo, Peter Rockford Espiritu, Puhipau, Wendy Arbeit. In addition to searching out specific titles, users can browse in a variety of ways, including by Cultural Group, Places Discussed, and People Discussed. The Hawaiian & Pacific Collections at UH-Manoa Hamilton Library are preparing for a construction project that will ultimately provide better shelving for our print newspaper collections. The construction will take place in our closed stacks area, but will require us to temporarily relocate our newspaper collections. Consequently, beginning in November 2014 portions of our newspaper collections may take longer than normal to retrieve for patrons, or may at times be unavailable altogether. Also beginning in November, we will be relocating boxed back-issues of newspapers into part of our reading room. The construction project is currently scheduled to be completed at the end of January, 2015, but this date is subject to change. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

Beginning Sunday, May 18, the Library will be upgrading its Voyager online catalog. This upgrade is expected to take several days, though an exact finish date is not yet available. While Hawaiian and Pacific Collection users will still be able to search the Voyager catalog as normal, they will not be able to submit online paging requests for materials. Instead, they will need to fill out a manual paging form for any materials housed in our closed stacks. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience.

The staff of the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections is happy to announce that we will be re-opening this Monday, August 26. As of that day we will resume normal fall semester hours (Monday - Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m.). As we continue to re-assemble our collections following the summer-long construction project, there may on occasion be delays in our normal retrieval times for requested materials and so we thank you in advance for your patience as we make a return to normal services.

As a result of the construction project that is underway in Hamilton Library, the three elevators on the first floor that directly lead to the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections are currently inaccessible. However,  please note that the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections are open for normal business hours  (as are floors 2 through 4 below us). To reach our collections, please go to the second floor of "Phase I" of the library -- i.e., the part of the building that houses the main entrance to the library, the circulation counter, business office and etc. -- and then proceed to "Phase II" of the library (the portion that holds the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections). From there, take an elevator up to the fifth floor. The 2nd floor of Phase I can be reached either via the stairwell that is located adjacent to the first floor circulation counter, or via two remaining elevators in the Phase I side of the building (which service floors 1 through 3 only). The UH-Manoa Library released a beta edition of "One Search" today. This new search tool allows users to search across a variety of resources using a single search box. While One Search does not by any means search all resources available to UH library users, it is a useful one-stop search tool for searching across the library's Voyager catalog, digital repositories (a.k.a. Scholarspace and eVols ), online photo collections , the Trust Territory Archives Index , and a selection of databases and other online resources. One Search is still in the beta phase, and so users should expect some inconsistencies. At the moment, One Search does not search in the Hawaii Pacific Journal Index , though it is hoped that this function will be added soon. The Hawaiian and Pacific Collections will be undergoing some transitions in 2013. With the retirement of Hawaiian Collection curator Joan Hori, the following librarians will remain in the department: Dore Minatodani, senior librarian, Hawaiian Collection Jodie Mattos, librarian, Hawaiian Collection Stu Dawrs, senior librarian,  Pacific Collection Eleanor Kleiber, librarian,  Pacific Collection At the time of her retirement, Joan Hori was also serving as department head for the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections. Stu Dawrs will serve as department head for the next two years. Regarding a replacement for Joan, the department has submitted a proposal for the position, and we are awaiting the hiring and the arrival of a new University Librarian for further action. As previously announced, a large-scale library construction project is slated to begin in the spring of 2013 and continue through August 2013. This construction project will move throughout much of the library, and at different times will affect access to most collections and services. The Hawaiian and Pacific Collections have tentatively been scheduled for closure toward the end of this project, and may be unavailable for up to eight weeks in the summer. Exact dates have not yet been set for this closure. In the meantime, during the spring the construction has the potential to drastically decrease the number of teaching spaces available throughout the library.  Faculty who include Hawai'i- or Pacific-related library instruction in their course syllabi are urged to contact Hawaiian and Pacific Collection librarians as soon as possible to schedule those sessions in order to ensure that a space is available in the library . The UH-Manoa Library has announced the addition of Saturday hours, commencing October 20. The full-text of this announcement is quoted below. Please note that the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections continue to follow their standard hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m.; closed Saturdays and holidays. The three-volume Hawaiian Legends Index  is well-known among Hawai'i researchers (and librarians). A searchable online version is now available on the internet.
